Marie Bonnot is working at the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle  – Paris 3 in Paris, France. Under the supervision of Professor Alain Schaffner she is writing her dissertation on the history of the literary genre of the dream narrative in the French 20th century. She is also a member of the network »Rêve« in Paris (research group Thalim; Sorbonne nouvelle/CNRS/ENS).

From September 2015 to April 2018 Marie Bonnot was an associated PhD candidate of the Graduate School »Europäische Traumkulturen«.

Le récit de rêve des surréalistes à nos jours: histoire des idées et évolution des formes

(english translation): Dream telling from surrealism to nowadays: epistemology and esthetics

This dissertation aims at presenting a history of the literary genre of the dream narrative in the French 20th century.

The first part of the dissertation is dedicated to epistemology. It shows how, from the 1920’s on, thinking about dreams influences thinking about literature, but also vice-versa. It starts by analysing the attitudes of the writers as dream specialists, especially as a parallel to scientific discourses. Furthermore it examines how literary inspiration and dreaming can be easily confounded but have to be clearly distinguished in the 20th century. Finally, I suggest that the way of reading a dream report in the 20th century has to be compared to the new interpretations of the dream. I propose to consider that 20th century literature is taking part in a »dream paradigm« in which revolves around the idea of association. The notion of »Traumarbeit«, elaborated by Freud, constrains writers to define what a literary work on dream would mean: does it consist of a special skill for dreaming and transcribing this experience, or does it happen during the actual moment of writing?

The second part of the dissertation tackles the esthetics of dream narratives. It highlights the variety of these texts, from surrealistic recollections of dreams by André Breton, Paul Eluard or Robert Desnos, to contemporary fictional short stories by Marcel Béalu or Frédérick Tristan. It also focuses on two other particular styles of narrating dreams: the formalistic approach of Raymond Queneau and Georges Perec in the 1960’s and the 1970’s and the reflection on art in dreams in Marguerite Yourcenar and Michel Butor’s works.

In conclusion, I underline the social and artistic function of the dream, which is to me, a way to understand this enigmatic state of consciousness.
